Sao Tome e Principe dropped out of the rankings at the end of 2007 after a year as the worst team in the world. Their sabbatical from the FIFA list was rather prolonged with a further four years passing by without any international action. Had they remained on the rankings during that period, they would have rivalled Montserrat and San Marino for the lengthiest spells as basement dwellers. As it was, they sat comfortably away from view leaving others to carry that tag. When they returned to action in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifying tie in 2011 they avoided defeat in securing a 1-1 draw with Congo. The subsequent ranking publication saw Sao Tome reappear in 192nd place, fully twelve positions above those languishing at the bottom.
