Montenegro’s split from Serbia saw them taking their international football bow in 2007. They made the slightly premature mistake of winning prior to receiving FIFA recognition, beating Hungary 2-1 in front of their vocal home fans in Podgorica. But once membership of FIFA was confirmed, they travelled to Japan to play two friendlies and lost them both, to Japan and Colombia. Since these constituted their first official fixtures in FIFA’s eyes, it was straight to the bottom of the rankings for the fledging nation. Home comforts proved more beneficial a few months down the line, when a draw was secured against near neighbours Slovenia. That result began their ascent of the rankings but not before they’d suffered three months listed as the worst in the world.
