Papua New Guinea’s spell as the Worst in the World was only ended when the national team’ inactivity meant they disappeared from the rankings altogether, although they first had to endure three long years propping up the rankings before being finally, mercifully cut loose. Having ultimately rid themselves of the unwanted label in this rather pacifistic manner, barely two months later they returned to action with a bang and roundly thrashed the Cook Islands 4-0. A return to the ranking saw them well clear of last place.
