Montenegro 3-0 San Marino

Far from the beating we’d feared for San Marino, a 3-0 defeat represents something of a triumph for our boys in blue against the team now installed at the top of group H (although they are the only team to have had the pleasure of playing San Marino twice so far).

Two first half goals from Andrija Delibašić ended this one early, but Montenegro could only add one more quite late on from Elsad Zverotić. It was enough to take Montenegro to the top of the group, extending their unbeaten run to seven games.

Delibašić opened the scoring on 14 minutes, converting Vladimir Volkov’s cross from the left, after a lively opening for the Rayo Vallecano player. He grabbed his second to double the advantage just past the half-hour when he redirected Mitar Novaković’s header past a helpless Aldo Simoncini in the San Marino goal.

The game followed a similar one-way pattern after the break as the hosts controlled the match at a steady pace. Elsad Zverotić completed the scoring on 68 minutes when he collected a Luka Djordjević pass and finished with aplomb, as they say. Delibašić almost completed his hat-trick late on but his shot came back off the post. Branko Brnović’s side will end the year top of Group H, two points clear of England.

Things could have been worse in this one, so perhaps it is a little bit of notable progress for San Marino I feel, but of course no goals and no points.  Looking ahead, next up is England at home and Poland away.  Oh lordy…

Current Standings:

1. Montenegro Pl. 4 Pts. 10
2. England 4 8
3. Poland 3 5
4. Moldova 4 4
5. Ukraine 3 2
6. San Marino 4 0
